Inspiration as Self-Nurturing

Inspiration as Self-Nurturing by Kelley Grimes at Cultivating Peace and Joy

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart”

~Helen Keller Read

What inspires you? What moves you and touches your heart? What takes your breath away or infuses you with hope? Take a moment to identify a few things that inspire you.

Are you inspired by nature… acts of kindness and love… or transformative stories of courage and forgiveness?

Does beauty, music, art, or poetry inspire you? How about a beautiful sunset or the unconditional love of a pet?

And who inspires you?

I feel so blessed to be moved and inspired by so many people and things in my life and am filled with such deep gratitude for the love, awe, wonder and creativity that inspiration evokes. My darling family inspires me every day and I am so grateful for the love and joy we share.

Inspiration is essential in encouraging our growth and potential and is an important aspect of self-nurturing. There is no more important time to cultivate a culture of inspiration in our communities than during times of great uncertainty and change. Intentionally finding things and people who inspire us every day allows us to transform feelings of despair and overwhelm into hope and possibility.

Whenever I need inspiration I read or listen to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech and am filled with a belief in the possibility of healing for our nation. It is so amazing how Dr. King’s inspiration created so many ripple effects that have fueled hope and determination in our nation and continues to influence us to be the best that we can be over fifty years later .

I believe the most remarkable impact of inspiration is the encouragement to connect to the best of who we are individually and collectively.

As social justice activist and author Chris Crass recommends we should take an inspiration shower every day to wash off the despair so we can continue to work for positive change in our world.

Whether you want to change your own life and/or the world, become aware of the things and people in your life that inspire you deeply and make them part of your daily self-nurturing practice.  Set an intention to be inspired each and every day and share the inspiration with others on social media and with family and friends, creating a culture of inspiration.

May you find inspiration in every day and may you continue to nurture peace in the world from the inside out!
