Healing Power of Creativity by Kelley Grimes at Cultivating Peace and Joy

“Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people”

~Leo Burnett

Creativity is such a profoundly self-nurturing activity. The creative process opens up new parts of ourselves, gives us fresh perspective, and nourishes our spirits in joyful and healing ways. Looking at the world through curious eyes inspires creativity, compassion, and new possibilities.

My husband Tony Serebriany and I both love to be creative! Tony is the photographer and graphic designer for Cultivating Peace and Joy and creates the daily inspirations for our self-nurturing mobile app with the content that I write.

When Tony taps into the flow of his creativity, he is fully present in the moment and loses track of time. Being creative is deeply rejuvenating for him and transforms his stress and the weight of responsibilities in his life into pure joy.

Creativity feeds my husband’s soul like nothing else and provides a powerful way for him to access his inner wisdom and express his authentic self. His creativity has been nurtured and encouraged throughout his life by his mother who is also an artist.

I love Maya Angelou’s reminder that “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” As a result, being creative nurtures us deeply and invites us to express our truth in powerfully healing ways.

Tony is also blessed to be able to use his creativity in his role as the Director of New Business Development and Inventor Relations for USAopoly a local board game company.

He also loves blowing glass, building things, being involved in creative projects with our daughters, paper making, screen printing, marbling, painting, drawing, writing poetry, acting, supporting local artists and of course photographing the world around him.

One way we love to be creative as a couple, family, and with our community is painting love note signs. We were inspired by Shannon Weber to engage in this healing process after listening to her Tedx Talk a few years ago and have been making them ever since. I am so excited to bring this creative practice to a women’s retreat next month where I have been invited to be the Keynote speaker and workshop facilitator.

I could not agree with Osho more, “To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it.

I feel so deeply grateful that I am supported in my life and my business by my incredibly creative husband. Not only do I feel encouraged to express my creativity, but he helps me manifest my visions of creating more peace, joy, and beauty in the world.

Creativity is a way of life in our home, and the joy, healing energy, and peace created is experienced by everyone who enters.

What vision do you have to create more beauty in the world?

Who in your life supports your creativity?

What form of creativity could you engage in today?

Creativity can be expressed in so many different ways and understanding that creativity is deeply self-nurturing elevates each activity and brings more motivation to explore ways to integrate it in our lives.

My favorite forms of creativity are singing and writing. I am grateful that you are reading my blog today and honoring my creative process. Thank you for sharing how you love to express your creativity in the comments below.

May you find ways to express your creativity each and every day and may you nurture peace in the world from the inside out!

Kelley Grimes

Sending you so much peace, love and gratitude,

Interesting… when I first arrived at your blog this morning, the photo at the top captured my attention and reminded me of how much I always enjoy your visual presentation. I, too, have a very creative and supportive husband. After retiring from corporate life, he’s dedicating time to writing, painting, gardening and other creative pursuits. A bonus is that visiting “smalls” enjoy raiding our art supplies!

    • Thank you Andrea! I love reading that your husband has dedicated his time to writing, painting, gardening and other pursuits since retirement and that you all are fellow writers! How wonderful to have visiting “smalls” to share your art supplies and be inspired to create together! I really appreciate your comment! Thank you!

    Lovely blog Kelley
    So inspiring.
    Thank you for sharing.

  • My creative tool of choice, first and foremost, is, of course, writing, but I also think of cooking as a creative outlet. When I am trying a new recipe, or even making one up as I go along, I get this creative surge that is over and above the good tasting food I end up with! Especially as I am a vegan, each new creation is like discovering a hidden treasure!

    • I love that you express your creativity with cooking and of course writing Barb. We have been vegetarian and sometime vegan for the past 32 years and love the opportunities for creativity that has opened us up to. Thank you so much for your comment!

  • Kelley–I love this! First, having met Tony, I enjoyed reading about the ways in which creativity fuels his life, and how that enhances yours. For me, the creative energies are the life force. When I am expressing myself creatively (and that can be by writing, speaking, teaching or even cooking!) I find that my health and well-being are sustained. It does indeed, “nurture peace in the world from the inside out!” Laurie

    • Thank you so much Laurie! I so resonate with your experience that by expressing yourself creatively your health and well-being are sustained! I so appreciate your comment!

  • Lovely post. I love how you weave the quotations and experience so skillfully.

Love this post Kelley! It has so many great quotes and strategies woven throughout. I particularly connected with: “Being creative nurtures us deeply and invites us to express our truth in powerfully healing ways.” What a creative person your husband is! Mine, too, is creative. He loves film and learning new things. He also brings his “right brain” to solve problems that others use only their left brain for. I find that being creative (e.g. painting, writing, dancing) helps me reconnect with my inner child; it helps bring my inner child out to play. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

    • Thank you so much for your comment Pamela! I love that you shared that being creative reconnects you with your inner child and allows you to play. Thank you for illustrating one of the healing aspects of creativity. I am so grateful!
